1 in 68 children are now diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

It is the fastest growing and most commonly diagnosed neurological disorder in Canada. ASD typically appears within the first three years of life.

It impacts normal brain development leaving most individuals with difficulties in verbal and non-verbal communication, difficulties with typical social interactions and a tendency to repeat specific patterns of behaviour.

Increasing UNDERSTANDING and ACCEPTANCE for individuals with autism is essential. With 1 in 68 children growing into adults with autism, creating a more autism-friendly society is desperately needed.

Children with autism often have meltdowns.

They are not misbehaving or throwing a tantrum. They are not unruly or spoiled and they do not simply need to be disciplined.

A meltdown can be caused by frustration with an inability to communicate effectively. Imagine not being able to verbalize or communicate your wants and needs with those around you. They can also be caused by painful or distressing sensory overload, which may not necessarily be perceived by others.

Autism is not an intellectual disability.

People with autism simply process information differently. Many people with autism have normal to high IQs but just like all humans, they fall somewhere along the spectrum. People with autism can have exceptional abilities just as they have limitations.

Open your mind to seeing intelligence presented in different ways than what society traditionally expects intelligence to “look” like.

Children will never outgrow their autism.

Autism is present across the lifespan. Many individuals on the spectrum work hard every day at using coping mechanisms that have been taught to them and they may learn how to deal quite successfully.  Those challenges will always be present for them though, and we must be understanding when stress levels become too high and they are overwhelmed and unable to cope. They have worked and are still working hard to fit into our world. Every. Single. Day.
